PA school shadowing is the part of the application most people defer until last and then realize was the part they should have started first. The hour totals are smaller than you would think but the strategic value is bigger than the application form admits.

Most programs do not require shadowing as a hard minimum

If you read 100 PA program admissions pages back to back, you would notice that very few of them set a hard shadowing minimum the way they set PCE minimums. Most use language like "shadowing strongly recommended" or "applicants are expected to have shadowing experience," which is admissions-speak for it matters but we are not going to put a number on it.

The honest read is this - shadowing matters less than PCE on the numerical screening of your application but more than PCE in the interview. The interviewer will ask why PA, not why nursing, not why medicine, and the answer that lands is the one that comes from having actually watched a PA work, not from reading about it.

How many hours is enough

A reasonable target is 40 to 80 hours of PA-specific shadowing across two to three different settings. Outpatient primary care plus an inpatient or ED rotation usually does it, because it shows you have seen the breadth of what PAs actually do - not just the office visit version.

You can absolutely apply with less. Many people do, and many of them get in. But you cannot apply with zero hours and expect to land the "why PA" answer cleanly, because the interview round will catch it. The applicants who walk into interview prep cold are the ones who did not shadow.

What counts and what does not

Shadowing is observation only - you watch, you do not perform tasks, you do not document. The line between shadowing and PCE is whether you are licensed to do clinical work in your role. If you are an EMT working a shift and you also happen to watch the ED PA, the hours count as PCE not shadowing.

Shadowing a PA-C counts. Shadowing an NP, a physician, or any other provider does not count toward PA shadowing specifically - it counts as healthcare exposure but you should still log dedicated PA hours separately on the CASPA form. Programs read the totals and the breakdown.

Where to find a PA willing to let you watch

The fastest path is asking the PAs you already know - your own primary care PA, the urgent care PA who treated a family member, a PA you met through a mutual contact. Most PAs remember being on your side of the application and will say yes if their employer permits it.

If you do not have any PA contacts, cold email is the next best path. Find PAs at a teaching hospital or a community clinic via their website, write a one-paragraph email saying you are pre-PA, asking for an hour of shadowing, and signing your full name. The yes rate is around one in three, which means you need to send three emails to land one shadow.

AAPA has a "Find a PA" feature, and so do many state PA chapters - both work as starting points. Avoid asking on Reddit since most PAs willing to host shadows do not advertise it on social media.

Logging your hours so CASPA accepts them

Each shadowing experience needs a contact name, a position, an organization, and dates. The verifier on the CASPA form is the person who can confirm you were actually there. Use the PA you shadowed, not their administrator.

Document hours as you go. A spreadsheet with date, hours, and supervising PA name is enough. Reconstructing 60 hours from memory at the end of the cycle is the most common reason applicants under-report their actual experience.
